The Amiga 1200 is an Amiga 600 with more memory, better graphics and a new Amiga Dos. This was the final 16 Bit machine that Commodore tried to push into the market, to beat IBM compatible computers. The system is well built, with a better OS (Workbench V3.1) and a program called Cross Dos to read IBM disks. Like all other Amiga computers the magnetic media is an internal 800KB drive. The machine wasn’t a failure since companies start constructing devices like external Co-processor boards, Hard Drives, CD-Rom readers and all sorts of software. I saw even a device to attach the computer to a network and a tower case to change the system into a tower computer. Magazines rated this machine with very good graphics, sound and user friendly OS. Commodore to compete with other computers released a program for the Internet so that Amiga users could go on the net to download programs and mail. Like all other models the A1200 is compatible with the other Amiga systems. The Hard Drive Controller can support a hard drive up to 2GB. The new Graphic chip-set made the machine a perfect picture & video editor especially for video titles. Some company used the machine for mixing & effects.

The graphic capabilities of the Amiga 1200 is handled by an Advanced Amiga (AA) chip-set. In text mode display the computer is able to display a 60 X 32 & 80 X 32 resolution. While in graphic Mode 320 X 256, 320 X 512, 640 X 256, 640 X 512 resolution. The Amiga has a palette of 1.6 million colours + 2 special modes. In 320 X x Mode it was capable of displaying 32 Colours, while in 640 X x mode it could display 16 Colours. The special modes are EHB 64 Colours and HAM 4096 colours on static display. These 2 special modes could display and digitize a photo into the computers memory and save it to disk. The A1200 like the A600 is also capable to display pictures of 1280 X 400 interlaced resolution, 1280 X 200 non interlaced mode & a new graphic resolution of 1280 x 512 interlaced or 1280 x 800 overscaned with a vertical scan rate up to 73 Hz. |

The Amiga is also equipped with a 4 Voice 8 bit PCM Stereo sound chip ( 2 Channels on each side) that could produce an infinite of sounds and music. This custom chip is also controlling the I/O ports of the machine. This helped to produce devices that could digitize sound into the computer, for later playback. |
