Commodore SX 64 - VIP 64 - DX 64 - SX-100 (Prototype)

The SX64 or SX -100 is a portable version of the Commodore 64 and therefore identical to the technical data with a large extent to it. As you can see from the picture above Commodore inserted a 5.25" drive with a spare bay for other devices such as an oscilloscope or another drive and included a 5" Colour monitor. In the DX64 instead of the spare bay it had an additional 5"1/4 drive. The SX64 has a removable keyboard identical to that of the Commodore 64 and serves as a cover for both the monitor and the drive. Due to the small monitor, it is a bit uncomfortable to work with. Fortunately the SX64 has a socket to connect the machine to a normal monitor. On the right hand side of the device there is a small plastic flap, from which you can adjust the volume, brightness, colour and contrast. Additionally the SX64 has a carrying handle, which makes the computer portable. Since Commodore installed a 1541 compatible drive, they decided to remove the interface for the cassette tape. Although as a machine was as good as the Commodore 64 Commodore did not sell a lot of these machines, due to it's expensive price. Commodore stopped the production of the SX-64 in 1986. The VIP 64 was the same as the SX64 except it was released for Europe users only.

6510 8 BIT CPU running at a frequency of 0.985Mhz in PAL and 1.02Mhz in NTSC

 

20 Kbytes Rom with basic V2.0 which takes up to 8Kbytes, Kernal another 8Kbytes and character set Rom 4 Kbytes. 64 Kbytes of Ram expandable to 512 Kbytes thru Expansion Port.

 

Dark grey case with a carrying handle for transportation, built in monitor and floppy. Same as Commodore 64 non standard QWERTY 66 key type external keyboard, with keys in light grey. The keyboard was also used as a protection for the small monitor and drive.

 

Vic-II 6569 Chip with 16-Colours and a text resolution of 40 x 25 using all 16 Colours. 320 X 200 Graphics Resolution using 2 Colors per 8 X 8 block in Standard Mode and 4 Colours per 8 x 8 block in Multi-Colour Mode. Max of 8 Sprite on screen with Collision Control and hardware scrolling . Sprite Size 24 x 21 Pixels with 1 Colour in standard form or 3 Colours in Multi-Colour Mode.

 

3 Channel 6581Sid Chip with white noise, Low/High pass Filter and 4 bit DAC for sampling playback. The chip takes care of sound leaving the Processor totally free. Also the SX64 has a built in speaker.

The club currently owns one Commodore SX-64 in excellent working condition. Unfortunately the computer is not boxed and no manuals. The system is a US version so a step down transformer is used for correct voltage.
